Poipu Beach - Movies in the Park - tonight, August 19, 2011

FREE family movie night at Poipu Beach Park, tonight, Friday, August 19, 2011.  Tonight's movie features Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son) in "The Karate Kid".  Jackie Chan is one of my favorites, so of course, I liked this movie!  Great family movie.

The movie starts at 8:00pm, but you'll want to GO EARLY to reserve a nice spot at the beach park.  Bring a beach towel or beach chair. Although this is a FREE event, make sure to bring some cash to purchase movie snacks from the  Koloa Elementary school  food concession booth. This is a wonderful way to support the children of the Koloa community..    Movies in the Park is sponsored by the The Poipu Rotary club and many other local businesses.

Poipu Fire

(photo credit: The Garden Island Newspaper)

A Poipu house and a cottage located in Weliweli Tract, burned to the ground, while other surrounding homes received smoke and fire damanges.  Click on following link to the Garden Island Newspaper for more detail:

Brushfire forces South Shore evacuation

According to the newspaper article, the community worked alongside the Kauai Fire Department in helping to control and fight the fire.  Accidents and disasters are inevitable, however it is always heartwarming to hear that the "aloha spirit" is very much alive and well in our local community.

Click on: http://www.thekauaimarathon.com/course/  to see video views of the Full and Half courses.  The courses are USATF and AIMS certified.

Poipu Paddle Fest - July 31, 2011- Koloa Plantation Days

A Paddle Fest, which included outrigger canoes and paddles boarders, concluded the final day of the 10 day Koloa Plantation Days event. I'm always up for a fun challenge, so I entered the short course, from Poipu Beach park to Kukui'ula Harbor. I opted for the SUP mode of transportation and graciously registered myself into the appropriate age category, which happily resulted in a 1st place win.

Me, flanked by the “Kukuiula SUP Team” Kaili Olores and Robert Miguel. I’m so glad the event had separate age divisions, these guys smoked it!

The race started from Poipu Beach Park.

And ended at Kukui'ula Boat Harbor.
